Navigating This Season of Life with Grace and Truth

If you’re a woman in your 40s or 50s and have started experiencing unexpected anxiety, restlessness, or even panic out of nowhere — you’re not alone.

Many women entering perimenopause or menopause are caught off guard by emotional shifts that feel hard to explain.

You may have handled stress pretty well before, but now things like simple social interactions, sleeplessness, or even making daily decisions feel overwhelming. And you start to wonder if you're going crazy.

You're probably wondering, "What’s happening to me?"

Common Symptoms of Anxiety During Perimenopause & Menopause

Hormonal changes impact more than your body—they can significantly affect your emotional and mental well-being.

Here are some common anxiety-related symptoms during this season:

  • Racing thoughts or sudden feelings of panic

  • Tightness in your chest or shortness of breath

  • Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep

  • Irritability or mood swings

  • Feeling overwhelmed by decisions you used to handle easily

  • Heightened sensitivity to stress

  • Worrying about your health, your future, or your purpose

While these symptoms may have a physiological root, they can also stir up emotional and spiritual questions that many women struggle to process on their own.

Why Faith Matters in This Season

For Christian women, this can be a spiritually disorienting time. You may wonder if your anxiety means you're lacking faith or if you're failing to trust God.

But Scripture reminds us:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

Jesus doesn’t shame us for being weary. He invites us closer. He doesn’t say, “Get it together." He says, “Come to me.”

Through the challenges that come with this time of transition, you can learn to receive peace and wisdom from the One who knows you completely and created your body and the way it functions.

Tips for Managing Anxiety During This Transition

Here are a few practical ways to manage anxiety as you navigate perimenopause or menopause:

1. Name the season you’re in.

Admit that your body is changing. Normalizing the shift is the first step toward self-compassion and managing personal expectations.

2. Anchor your mind in truth.

Write down calming Scriptures like Philippians 4:6-7 or Isaiah 41:10 and revisit them often. God's Word doesn’t change, even when your hormones do.

“Do not fear, for I am with you… I will strengthen you and help you.” – Isaiah 41:10

3. Create space to pause.

Create more margin in your day, especially in the mornings as you get your day started. Breathe deeply. Spend time in prayer or journaling. Having more breathing room in your schedule can calm your nervous system.

4. Talk to someone who gets it.

You don’t need to push through alone. Speaking with a counselor who understands both the emotional and spiritual layers of this season can help you find relief and clarity.
